GE-EDGE
An edge gateway that collects data from equipment of different makes and protocols, pre-processes it locally and delivers it securely over MQTT, Modbus and OPC UA.
AvailableA typical cell laboratory contains ULT freezers from several manufacturers, liquid nitrogen tanks, incubators, a controlled-rate freezer and cleanroom sensors. Each shows the correct value on its own display. The problem is that those values never meet on one timeline and in one record. GE-EDGE is the translation point that brings them together.

Protocols
| Protocol | Role | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Modbus RTU and TCP | Reading raw values from devices and sensors | No built-in security; carries no context |
| OPC UA | Industrial data exchange with metadata | Heavier; needs more compute |
| MQTT | Northbound delivery to the central platform | Not intended for low-level device control |
In practice the gateway polls a Modbus device on its serial port, reads an OPC UA server over Ethernet and publishes everything northbound over MQTT. Laboratory equipment often uses manufacturer-specific protocols; these are implemented as drivers and translated.
Edge processing
The gateway is not only a relay. It filters invalid readings, smooths noisy signals, reports by exception and can evaluate thresholds locally, so an alarm decision does not depend on the network being available.
Time and security
- Records are stamped from the device real-time clock and synchronized to a common time source, so deviation investigations can establish sequence
- Local buffering sized against the longest expected outage
- TLS, certificate-based authentication and role-based access; device network segmented from the hospital network
